Restrict access and hide

In Moodle, there are different ways to hide or show things and to show things only under certain conditions.

Hide course

Moodle course creation and authorization assignment is automatic. From the time of assignment, students have access to the associated Moodle course. If you do not want this, you can hide the Moodle course from students for the time of creation or revision.

  1. To do this, click on "Settings" in the Moodle course in the menu bar under the course title. 
  2. Under "Course visibility" you can hide the course from students. Don't forget to change the setting back to "Show" after you finish editing.

Hide topic (section)

  1. In edit mode, select "Hide topic" from the context menu to the right of the section name.
  2. The topic incl. all activities and working resources contained in it will be hidden from students.

Hide activity or resource

  1. In edit mode, select "Hide" from the context menuto the right of the activity or resource to hide it from students.

  1. Click on the activity or resource. 
  2. Select "Settings" in the menu bar under the course title.
  3. Under "Common module settings" you can also set the "Availability" to "Hide on course page".

  1. In edit mode, to the right of the activity or resource, select "Edit settings" in the context menu .
  2. Under "Common module settings" you can also set the "Availability" to "Hide on course page".

Show topic, activity or resource only under certain conditions

  1. In Edit mode, to the right of the topic, activity, or resource item, choose "Edit section" or "Edit settings" from the context menu .
  2. Under "Restrict access" > "Add restriction..." you can now define under which circumstances it should be visible to students, e.g. grade of an activity, group or a special period. You can also find an explanation of this in the official Moodle documentation.

    If you want to specify a period until the end of a day, please select 23:59 instead of 00:00 for better understanding.
